Top 5 Mistakes Podcast Guests Make (and what to do about it)

If you want to grow an audience of potential clients, customers, or loyal fans through podcast guesting & be the guest who gets invited back again and again, then you need solutions to the top 5 mistakes plaguing podcast guests today.

  1. Podcasting is an audio medium… and you’re not using your voice properly. (Hint: laid-back talking or using your best “NPR voice” guarantees your listeners will tune out.)

  2. You think you’ve prepared… but then it all goes sideways (or - worst of all - it all goes boring). Remember that teacher in high school who made 2/3 of your class fall asleep while the other 1/3 stared glumly out the window? The one who talked on and on, seemingly forgetting there were other people in the room? Let’s learn from their mistakes.

  3. Surprise! You're going to be on YouTube… out of nowhere it's lights, camera, action but your backdrop & lighting are unsophisticated or unflattering.

  4. You show up with the wrong equipment… and the sound quality makes listeners press “skip” on your episode. Why struggle to hear when there are hundreds of other episodes in their feed?

  5. You fall into one of the Podcasting Major Traps - a rambling introduction, driving your own agenda, forgetting to do your homework, or a lack of vocal energy - and you miss all the moments that will guarantee your episode is one of your host’s favorites.

Which one is your kryptonite? And what can you do about it?

If I'm honest... it's sometimes impossible to figure this out on our own. As my business coach says, "You can't read the label from inside the bottle." But... if you want to give it a try, take a moment to make yourself a cup of strong coffee, put on those high-quality headphones,* and listen to an entire episode you were on from start to finish with no distractions.

When I'm directing a play, here's how I know if a moment isn't working: I start thinking about something else. What am I having for dinner? Where did I park my car? Oh crap I need to email my kid's school... etc. When I notice that my mind has wandered, I know something in that moment onstage isn't working.

So - when you're listening, pay special attention to when you stop paying attention. Then go back and figure out what happened. Was your story wandering? Did you go too long without changing your vocal inflection? Was the audio hard to hear?

Once you know what the problem is, then you're thatmuchcloser to knowing how to solve it.

*Don’t have high-quality headphones? Congratulations! You’ve identified your first problem. 😉

So now: let's talk about solutions!

Last time, I shared some key stats about podcasts and why, if it's not already a part of your marketing strategy, it will be soon.

I also hinted at an offer that came out of a guest spot I had on someone else's podcast.

When you nail a podcast interview, it spreads your message to your potential audience. You add email subscribers & followers… who turn into clients & customers. This can have a huge, long-term value for your business. But only if you do it right from the start.

I want to help you do it right! So I’ve teamed up with Podcast Expert and super successful podcaster (we’re talking 60k+ downloads per month) Joe Casabona to offer the Essential Podcast Guest Success Bundle.

My How to be a Successful Podcast Guest course helps speakers like you avoid common, but non-obvious, mistakes and pitfalls. AND gives you the prescription to heal your every ailment. Fast.

In his Podcast Guest Audit, Joe listens to an episode you were on and does a deep dive for you on content, technology, and how to leverage this appearance. Uncover what you can't see (or hear!) BEFORE your next interview so you never make these mistakes again.

We’re bundling these together to save you $98.

Here’s how it works: when you purchase How to Be a Successful Podcast Guest, you'll get a link to save $98 on Joe's podcast audit.
